George Washington’s Birthday Dinner

The NSDAR Francisco Garces Chapter and the NSSAR Signers Chapter co-hosted the George Washington’s Birthday dinner at the Las Vegas National Golf Club banquet room.
In attendance were members of numerous southern Nevada DAR chapters and members of the southern Nevada SAR Signers Chapter. The featured speaker for the event was Stan Vaughan, whose topic was POWs of Charleston, South Carolina.
The night started off with past Signers Chapter President Jeff Gutting receiving a medal and certificate for his leadership of the chapter last year.
DAR members were dressed in colonial-style dresses and several Signers chapter members wore Revolutionary War outfits.
Stan Vaughan’s presentation revealed numerous historical facts not well understood or known, including communications between Continental Army Commander in Chief George Washington and the British Army high command regarding POW exchanges. Another surprise was the revelation that some colonial army members joined the British Army fighting in the Caribbean to escape their captivity in deplorable conditions on prison ships. The book, “Relieve Us of This Burden”, written by Carl Borick, was a rich source of information that Stan described. When his presentation concluded, Stan was given an Appreciation Certificate and a gift.
A successful raffle and a silent auction were held by the Francisco Garces chapter at the end of the event.
